What is gpupdate.exe?

Gpupdate.exe is Microsoft DOS gpupdate command for Group Policy Refresh Utility. It is able to refresh setting of the local computers policy and any Active Directory-based Group policies, including security settings. This file replaces the out of date /refresh policy option for the secedit command. Gpupdate is built into Windows operating system and Windows server. This process works to reuse your polices in the dynamic way.

It is predetermined that Group Policy settings are refreshed on domain controllers every five minutes. The Gpupdate.exe file can be used to force the policy settings to be kept currently on Windows operating system instantly. Gpupdate renews Group Policy settings based on local and Active Directory as well as security settings; Determines to only update User or only Computer policy settings. By default, both User and Computer policy settings are renewed.

Gpupdate.exe reuses all policy settings have changed by default; Defines how many seconds to wait for policy processing to finish; Causes a logoff after the Group Policy settings have been renewed for those client-side extensions that handle policy when a user logs on rater than on a background refresh cycle; Causes a reboot after the Group Policy settings are renewed for those client-side extensions that handle policy at computer startup rather than on a background refresh cycle.

  1. THE MD5 hash on my GPUPDATE.EXE file is not correct. Where to download a valid copy of GPUPDATE.EXE.
  2. User is part of a domain and user is not part of local admin or power user groups or any custom group and user is not part of domain admin group, yet user show that he is administrator.
  3. Desktop Wallpaper GPO doesn't apply to all Users using Win7: Checked the policy config, image is accessible by all users, ran gpupdate /force, gpresult shows that the policy is being applied to users.
  4. Errors in gpsvc.log and gpupdate /force are failing with "Group policy processing failed because of internal system error". RSOP is showing in computer configuration, Registry error, Unspecified. ProcessGPORegistryPolicy: Encountered error 87 when populating registry with settings in temporary archive file.
  5. The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved.

Why do I have gpupdate.exe errors?

This issue maybe temporarily happens and could result from Name Resolution/ Network Connectivity to the current domain controller; File Replication Service Latency when a file was created on another domain controller and has not copied to the current domain controller; The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been stopped.

It may be an administrator rights problem for windows 7 domain client. Administrator rights are not applying to the user when entering gpupdate/ force, it is taking long time and it doesn't succeed. This is NOT a domain, this is a small home network and by the time you were doing this, it was effectively a stand-alone computer as the machine is strictly a client, while the desktops have shares, remote desktop, and telnet server.

It is possibly caused by malware. Malicious compilers like to take gpupdate.exe for some malicious purpose by inserting their code into this file and thus breaking it abnormally. Outdated system files or drive can lead to compatibility problems which would result in gpupdate.exe errors.

Solutions to fixing gpupdate.exe errors

In case of failure to process Group Policy, Windows will try to read new Group Policy settings for the current user or computer. Search in the details tab for error code and description. This operation will be done again automatically at the next renewing cycle. Computers linked to the domain should be supported with proper name resolution and network connectivity to a domain controller so as to find out new Group Policy objects and settings. An event will be logged when Group Policy is successful. To check for the problem, examine the event log or run GPRESULT /H GPReport.html from the command line to access information about Group Policy results.
